Changan Benben officially went offline last week, marking the end of an era for this compact city car. Its rounded design aligns with the current trend in micro-car aesthetics. The car was unveiled as Changan Automobile Group's first self-branded model, CV6, and it represents a major milestone as the first vehicle to be fully developed and produced in-house by a domestic automaker.
Announced earlier this year, the Changan Benben is part of the company’s broader strategy to focus on sedans and elevate its brand presence. Xu Liuping, President of Changan Automobile Group, emphasized that the launch of Benben reflects the company's commitment to building a strong domestic automotive brand. Despite being a leader in autonomous vehicle development, Xu also expressed the importance of collaboration, stating that Changan will work alongside FAW, SAIC, and Dongfeng to promote the growth of China’s auto industry. This suggests that Changan sees itself as a key player—perhaps the "fourth tier" in the domestic market.
The Benben is positioned as a mini car, designed with input from Changan’s overseas R&D center in Turin, Italy. It features a 1.3-liter engine with excellent fuel efficiency, consuming only 4.4 liters per 100 km, and meets national III emission standards. The car's design was a joint effort between Changan and IDEA, one of Italy’s top automotive design firms. Notably, the rear seats can be folded, adding versatility to the vehicle. With a wheelbase of 2360 mm, the Benben is built to be practical and efficient.
Although the exact price hasn’t been announced, insiders suggest it will stay under 50,000 yuan. The car is set to debut at the Beijing Auto Show later this year, with more details to follow.
Changan has invested heavily in R&D, establishing centers in Chongqing, Turin, and Shanghai, along with offices in Germany and Austria. The company has over 1,000 researchers working on independent innovation, with a cumulative investment of 3 billion yuan. The European Design Center in Turin, led by experienced designers from Ford, Toyota, and Honda, plays a key role in shaping future models like CV7 and CV8.
In addition to Benben, Changan plans to launch 16 new models with full intellectual property rights during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan." These include CV7, CV8, CV9, and CV11. The mid-size CV8, expected to hit the market in 2008, will feature a 2.0L engine and a fully self-developed chassis.
Looking ahead, Changan aims to reach 1 million units in production and sales by 2008, growing to 1.5 million by 2010. The company also targets 80,000 units in overseas exports and a 15% market share. By 2010, over 50% of its total sales are expected to come from self-developed models, with six or more vehicle platforms in development. Changan is also focusing on reducing fuel consumption and developing Euro IV and hybrid technologies.
