Changan Benben officially went offline last week, marking the debut of a compact car that perfectly aligns with today’s micro-car design trends. The rounded shape and sleek profile reflect modern aesthetics while maintaining affordability and practicality. Last week, Changan Automobile Group unveiled its first self-branded model, CV6, named “Ben Ben.” This marks a significant milestone as it is the first vehicle from a domestic automaker to achieve full autonomy in both R&D and production. The launch underscores Changan’s commitment to building its own brand and strengthening its position in the competitive automotive market. The naming of Changan Benben was announced alongside the company's broader branding strategy. According to Xu Liuping, president of Changan Automobile Group, the car symbolizes a key step in implementing the company’s strategy of focusing on sedans. He emphasized the iconic value of the Benben, highlighting its role in shaping Changan’s future direction. Interestingly, despite being a leader in autonomous vehicle development, Xu also expressed a desire for collaboration with other major Chinese automakers like FAW, SAIC, and Dongfeng. This reflects Changan’s vision of contributing to the growth of China’s auto industry as a leading force, positioning itself as the “fourth tier” among domestic manufacturers. Regarding pricing, Changan has not yet released specific figures, but insiders suggest that the Benben will be priced below 50,000 yuan. The car is expected to debut at the Beijing Auto Show this year, with more details to follow soon. Designed by Changan’s overseas R&D center in Turin, Italy, the Benben features a compact, efficient design. It uses a 1.3-liter engine with an impressive fuel efficiency of 4.4 liters per 100 km and meets national III emission standards. The rear seats can be folded, offering added flexibility. With a wheelbase of 2360 mm, the car balances comfort and space effectively. Changan has invested heavily in R&D, establishing centers in Chongqing, Turin, Shanghai, Germany, and Austria. These facilities support the development of multiple models, including the upcoming CV7 and CV8. The European Design Center in Turin, led by experienced designers, plays a crucial role in shaping the brand’s global image. Looking ahead, Changan plans to launch 16 new models with independent intellectual property during the "11th Five-Year Plan" period. These include the Benben, CV7, CV9, CV11, and the mid-size CV8, scheduled for release in 2008. The company aims to boost sales significantly, targeting over 1 million units by 2008 and reaching 1.5 million by 2010. With a focus on innovation and international collaboration, Changan is setting ambitious goals for the future. The company seeks to dominate the domestic market and expand its presence globally, all while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability and technological advancement.
