According to a report from the U.S. publication *Chemical Weekly*, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is reportedly exploring the development of a new polypropylene (PP) facility with an annual capacity of 150,000 tons in India. While the company hasn’t revealed detailed plans, it emphasized that this project will mark the first PP unit in South India and is part of its broader strategy to significantly expand its petrochemical operations over the next five years.
IOC first entered the petrochemical industry in 2004, with the launch of a 12 million tonne/year linear alkylbenzene (LAB) plant in Baroda. The company has since expanded its presence, including a 360,000-tonne/year paraxylene plant and a 530,000-tonne/year PTA (purified terephthalic acid) plant at its Panipat refinery complex.
These projects were part of IOC’s $2.5 billion investment plan in the petrochemical sector between 2002 and 2007, during which petrochemicals accounted for 45% of the company’s total capital expenditure. Now, the company is looking to extend its investment horizon beyond 2007, aiming to make petrochemicals a core strategic business unit.
Under the revised plan, IOC is considering the construction of an 800,000-tonne/year ethylene naphtha cracker at the Panipat complex, set to be completed by 2008. The company also plans to develop an integrated refinery and petrochemical project in India, featuring new facilities for polypropylene (PP) and styrene production. This expansion underscores IOC’s long-term vision to strengthen its position in the growing Indian petrochemical market.
