According to a report from the U.S. publication *Chemical Weekly*, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is exploring the development of a new polypropylene (PP) plant with an annual capacity of 150,000 tons in South India. While specific project details remain undisclosed, IOC emphasized that this will be the region’s first PP unit and a key component of its broader strategy to expand petrochemical operations over the next five years.
IOC entered the petrochemical sector in 2004 with the launch of a 12 million tonne/year linear alkylbenzene (LAB) plant in Baroda, marking a significant step in its diversification. The company has since continued to grow its presence, including the construction of a 360,000 tpa paraxylene plant and a 530,000 tpa PTA (purified terephthalic acid) plant at its Panipat refinery complex.
These projects were part of IOC’s larger $2.5 billion investment plan in the petrochemical industry between 2002 and 2007, during which petrochemicals accounted for 45% of the company’s total capital expenditure. Looking ahead, IOC is considering extending its petrochemical investment strategy through 2012, aiming to establish the sector as a standalone strategic business unit.
As part of this expansion, the company plans to build a new 800,000-tonne ethylene naphtha cracker at the Panipat site, expected to come online by 2008. Additionally, IOC is working on an integrated refinery and petrochemical project in India, which will include new facilities for polypropylene (PP) and styrene production. These developments underline IOC’s long-term commitment to strengthening its position in the global petrochemical market.
