On August 11, according to a report by the Beijing Times via China News Service, the long-anticipated restructuring of Jinbei General Motors has finally been completed. The reorganization involves Shanghai General Motors (SGM) along with its parent companies, SAIC and General Motors China. The new entity, now officially approved by the Ministry of Commerce, is named Shanghai General Motors (Shenyang) Beisheng Automobile Co., Ltd. This marks the third major production base for SGM in China, and it will be responsible for mass-producing the popular GL8 series models.
It's worth noting that the Chevrolet Trailblazer, once GM’s flagship model, has been discontinued. Meanwhile, the GL8 series—SGM’s high-profile product line—will be relocated to the Shenyang Beisheng plant by the end of September. Industry insiders suggest that this move represents another step in the expansion of SGM’s operational system, following the establishment of the Dongyue base as the second production hub for the Sail model.
Since April last year, the Dongyue Production Base has fully taken over the production of the Sail model, successfully completing the transition. This experience has helped SGM gain more confidence in replicating its operational model at the Beisheng facility. Analysts believe that within just two years, the completion of both the Yantai Dongyue and Shenyang Beisheng production bases will significantly boost SGM’s ability to penetrate various market segments, reinforcing its position as a leader in China’s automotive industry.
Shanghai GM Beisheng Automobile was previously known as Jinbei General Motors. In March of this year, the company underwent a merger and restructuring, with SAIC, General Motors China, and SGM each holding 25%, 25%, and 50% stakes respectively. The total investment reached $230 million, with nearly 50 million yuan already invested. (Reporter: Xue Yan Conggang)
