In May and June this year, a series of brake-related issues emerged with Isuzu concrete mixer trucks in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. The problems, which involved delayed braking response, raised serious safety concerns among users and local authorities. As a result, the Wenzhou traffic management department conducted spot checks and confirmed the existence of the issue. In response, 99 Isuzu concrete mixers were temporarily taken off the road until the safety hazards were resolved. Zheng, the general manager of a local concrete company, shared his frustration with reporters, explaining that the situation had caused significant disruptions. His company, along with over 10 others in the area, was affected by the problem, with nearly 100 Isuzu heavy trucks involved. The impact on construction projects was substantial, as each mixer is tied to an ongoing project. With vehicles idled for days, both contractors and project owners were under pressure to resolve the issue quickly. This incident is not isolated. Reports indicate that similar brake problems have been reported in other parts of China. In March of this year, Isuzu faced another major issue when its imported heavy-duty trucks were found to have steering system interference, leading to the cancellation of their 3C certification and a suspension of imports. That event still lingers in people's memories, and now, just months later, a new problem has surfaced, raising questions about the reliability of Isuzu’s products. The Wenzhou traffic management department, in collaboration with quality inspection agencies, is working to identify the root cause of the braking issues. Experts from the AQSIQ (General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine) have reviewed the situation and concluded that the brake system defects fall within the scope of necessary rectifications. As a result, Isuzu has been urged to develop practical solutions and submit them for expert review before implementation. To minimize the impact on construction projects, the Wenzhou vehicle management department recently allowed some of the stopped trucks to operate temporarily under a special license. These temporary permits are renewed every five days, allowing for ongoing monitoring and adjustments if needed. Isuzu (China) Investment Co., Ltd. responded to the issue through its general manager, Terahara, who acknowledged the reported problems. The company has since introduced four improvement measures, including increasing air tank capacity, linking foot brakes with exhaust brakes, improving the sensing-loaded proportional valve cushion, and providing training on maintenance and driving techniques. Additionally, future C-series models exported to China will include these improvements to prevent similar issues. Despite the challenges, Chinese users remain concerned about the overall quality of Isuzu’s heavy trucks. Many believe that foreign brands often overlook the unique conditions in China, such as harsher driving environments and different driver behaviors. For multinational automakers like Isuzu, adapting their products to meet the specific needs of the Chinese market is crucial for long-term success. In a competitive market like China, simply relying on product prestige or blaming users for improper operation is not enough. Companies must prioritize user experience, ensure product safety, and provide reliable after-sales support.
