The successful introduction of genetically modified super rapeseed varieties "Zhuyou No.1" and "Zhaoyou No.2" in Zhejiang Province has significantly boosted the rapeseed industry by offering high oil content germplasm resources. These varieties are not only a breakthrough in genetic engineering but also represent a major step forward in improving oil yield and quality for future agricultural production.
"Zhuyou No.1" exhibits excellent agronomic traits, including tall plant height, thick stalks, dense grain clusters, and a high number of seeds per pod. It is known for its strong field performance with no shattering, making it ideal for large-scale farming. According to tests conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture Oil Products Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center, the oil content of this variety reaches an impressive 47.8%. Its double-low parentage ensures low levels of erucic acid (0.7%) and high oleic acid (63.0%), making it a top-quality oilseed variety.
"Zhaoyou No.2" also stands out with its tall growth, dark green foliage, abundant branches, and high seed yield. The oil content in its seeds is even higher, reaching up to 52.7%, which represents the highest recorded oil content in *Brassica napus* globally. This variety can increase oil yield per hectare from 795 kg to 1110 kg, showcasing its potential for boosting both productivity and profitability in the oilseed sector.
These new high-yield varieties were developed using advanced biological technology at the Crop Quality Improvement Genetic Engineering Laboratory of the Institute of Atomic Energy, Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Over five years, researchers focused on optimizing photosynthate distribution to regulate the protein-to-oil ratio in seeds, resulting in a significant breakthrough in oilseed breeding.
During a recent on-site inspection and acceptance meeting in Zhejiang, experts praised the achievement as a milestone in improving rapeseed quality and enhancing the overall level of oil crop breeding.
