According to a recent report from "Chemical Weekly" in the U.S., Jean-Bernard Lartigue, CEO of Total Petrochemicals, revealed that the company is planning to construct an industrial-scale Olefin Cracking Process (OCP) plant within the next five years. The proposed facility could be located at the refinery and petrochemical complex in Antwerp. This innovative process is designed to convert C4 to C8 hydrocarbon fractions from refineries and petrochemical plants into valuable products like ethylene and propylene. A key feature of the OCP technology is the use of a zeolite catalyst, which significantly boosts propylene output. The OCP technology was developed jointly by Total and UOP, a U.S.-based company, and has already undergone successful testing at the Feluy petrochemical plant in Belgium. In addition, Total and UOP are moving forward with their earlier plans to integrate the OCP process with the Methanol-to-Olefins (MTO) process, which was jointly developed by UOP and Hydro. Lartigue mentioned that a pilot plant combining both technologies will start operations in Feluy next year, running until 2010. The results from this trial will help determine whether the combined system is ready for full-scale industrial application. Lartigue explained that while the MTO process can produce equal amounts of ethylene and propylene, the MTO-OCP combination can generate them in a 2:1 ratio, favoring propylene. He also highlighted that the process becomes economically viable when crude oil prices reach $30 per barrel or higher, offering better competitiveness compared to traditional olefin production methods. Although Lartigue did not specify the location of the first commercial MTO-OCP plant, he mentioned that Total is exploring the possibility of establishing a joint venture in China. This potential project would involve a methanol plant using coal as the primary feedstock. Additionally, the company is considering building a similar facility in the Middle East, powered by natural gas. These developments underscore Total's strategic push to diversify its feedstock sources and enhance its position in the global olefins market.
