On August 11, according to a report by the Beijing Times via China News Service, the long-awaited reorganization of Jinbei General Motors has finally been completed. The restructuring involved Shanghai General Motors (SGM) and its two parent companies—SAIC and General Motors China—who have reorganized Jinbei General Motors, which received approval from the Ministry of Commerce. The newly formed company will be named Shanghai General Motors (Shenyang) Beisheng Automobile Co., Ltd.
This marks the third vehicle production base for SGM in China, and it will now be responsible for mass-producing the GL8 series models. It has also been revealed that the Chevrolet Trailblazer, once GM's flagship model, has been discontinued. The GL8 series, a key product line for SGM, will be relocated to the Shenyang Beisheng plant by the end of September.
Industry insiders noted that the establishment of SGM Beisheng is another step in expanding SGM’s operational system. This follows the opening of the Dongyue base in Yantai, which became the second major production hub for the Sail model. Since April last year, the Dongyue base has fully taken over the production of Sail models and successfully completed the transfer. This experience has made SGM more confident in replicating its operational model at the Beisheng plant.
Analysts believe that completing two major production bases—Yantai Dongyue and Shenyang Beisheng—within less than two years will significantly speed up SGM’s expansion into different market segments. This move is expected to reinforce SGM’s position as a leading player in China’s automotive industry.
Previously known as Jinbei General Motors Co., Ltd., the company underwent a merger and restructuring in March this year. SAIC, General Motors China, and SGM each held 25%, 25%, and 50% stakes respectively. The total investment reached $230 million, with nearly 50 million yuan already invested.
