In an effort to calm the market and restore confidence, Brilliance Jinbei revealed its upcoming product roadmap ahead of schedule. The new B-Class M2 sedan was already in production since 2005, while the M3 model is currently in development. However, recent media attention has focused on the resignations of several key executives from Brilliance IV, including Wu Xiao'an, Hong Xing, Su Qiang, and He Tao. These reports have triggered a wave of speculation, leading to sharp declines in Brilliance's stock prices in both Hong Kong and the U.S. Rumors began circulating that China's own-brand automaker, Brilliance Automotive, might be shutting down.
To address these concerns, Brilliance Jinbei and Brilliance China Overseas officially denied the rumors and sent letters to national distributors across China and Jinbei, urging them to help put an end to the unrest. As part of their efforts to stabilize the situation, the company also shared its future product plans with the public. It was reported that after the launch of the M1 model, Brilliance had been building its own R&D system. In 2002, the company initiated the development of the new B-Class M2 sedan, which measures 4.6 meters long and comes in multiple configurations, including a turbocharged engine developed jointly by Brilliance, targeting the family car segment. The M2 has completed its design phase and is set to go into mass production in 2005.
Additionally, various models of the M3 and self-developed A-class platforms are under development, with expected launches in 2007 and 2008, respectively. The Jinbei brand will also expand into high-end MPVs, low-end passenger and cargo vehicles, as well as the Sea Lion series, offering multiple configurations with price ranges between RMB 140,000 and RMB 230,000. Shen Ming emphasized that "building our own brand is a long and challenging process, and Brilliance will continue on this path."
While the rumor mill has caused some disruption, it hasn't significantly impacted the dealer network. Some reports suggested that sales of Zhonghua sedans and Brilliance Jinbei models were affected, with a noticeable drop in sales. However, according to interviews with Guangzhou Huachen dealers, the situation isn't as severe as it seems. The head of Guangwu Huaxu Automobile Sales Company told reporters that the management rumors didn’t have a major impact on the market or brand image, and consumers weren’t overly concerned about the incident.
Instead, the recent price cuts and consumer hesitation have contributed to the decline in Chinese sedan sales. But this trend reflects the broader automotive market conditions. According to data from major dealers in Guangdong, the profitability of Zhonghua sedans and Jinbei Sea Lions is not worse than other brands in the same category. Hua Xu stated they would not only avoid pulling out but would further strengthen their competitive edge and consider taking additional steps to boost sales.
All Brilliance distributors in Guangzhou expressed confidence in the brand’s resilience. They believe that as one of China’s few independent automakers, Brilliance won’t easily fall. After the recent rumors, the market is expected to stabilize, and dealers remain optimistic about the future performance and market potential of Zhonghua and Jinbei models. They are looking forward to the upcoming sales peak in September, particularly for models like the Chinese car and the Golden Cup. (Li Guangman)
