The 15th National Phosphate Fertilizer and Sulfuric Acid Industry Annual Meeting, hosted by the China Phosphate Fertilizer Industry Association and the China Sulfuric Acid Industry Association, took place in Guiyang from June 14th to 16th. Over 310 representatives from more than 180 companies attended this significant event, which aimed to review past achievements and plan for future growth in the industry.
The meeting focused on summarizing the progress made during the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period, sharing best practices in production, research, sales, and management, and setting the stage for development in the upcoming "Eleventh Five-Year Plan." It served as a crucial platform for industry leaders to exchange insights and address key challenges facing the sector.
Wu Xiyan, President of the China Phosphate Fertilizer Industry Association, delivered a comprehensive report highlighting the remarkable growth of the phosphate fertilizer industry during the "Tenth Five-Year Plan." He emphasized that under favorable national policies and the dedication of industry professionals, China's phosphate fertilizer sector achieved world-leading results. Notably, in 2005, China's production surpassed that of the United States, reaching 11.25 million tons—making it the top producer globally. The product structure also saw significant improvements, with high-concentration phosphorus compound fertilizer output rising from 2.35 million tons (35.4% of total output) in 2000 to 6.78 million tons (60.3% of total output) in 2005. Domestic self-sufficiency and market share also increased significantly, with self-sufficiency rates jumping from 79.8% to 96.4%, and domestic market share rising from 76.5% to 89.7%.
Additionally, the industrial layout became more rational, with higher concentration levels and improved resource allocation. However, Wu also pointed out several pressing issues, such as low industry concentration, limited technological capabilities, over-reliance on government support, and weak international competitiveness. The scarcity of phosphorus resources was identified as a major obstacle to long-term development, while foreign investment posed new challenges in the post-transition era.
Looking ahead, Wu proposed strategies for the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan," including scientific utilization of phosphorus and sulfur resources, shifting production centers to Yunnan, Guiyang, Hubei, and Sichuan, and focusing on specialty fertilizers. He also emphasized the need for product upgrades, forming large-scale enterprise groups, accelerating the circular economy, and enhancing technological innovation to boost global competitiveness.
During the "Tenth Five-Year Plan," the high-concentration phosphate and compound fertilizer industry experienced rapid growth, driving an unprecedented increase in sulfuric acid production. In 2003, China's sulfuric acid output surpassed the U.S. for the first time, maintaining the top position for three consecutive years. Under the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan," the industry should focus on utilizing smelter gas for acid production, improving sulfur quality, increasing ore efficiency, and producing according to demand. Unregulated small enterprises must be phased out to improve economic performance and ensure sustainable development.
