Guangxi Liuzhou Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. has made a significant breakthrough with its newly developed "low-water/gas-to-sulfur conversion process for pulverized coal gasification," offering a more efficient and eco-friendly approach to synthetic ammonia production. This innovative method not only ensures smoother operations but also contributes to energy savings and reduced emissions. As of the press release date, the technology has been successfully implemented in the production of 300,000 tons of synthetic ammonia annually at the Liuhua pulverized coal gasification plant. The system is performing well, with stable product quality and operational parameters within expected ranges.
An expert panel from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association evaluated the new process on the 12th and gave it a positive review. They recommended accelerating the industrial promotion of this technology and expanding its application in coal gasification equipment. The successful development of this process addresses key challenges such as high carbon monoxide (CO) concentration and the risk of methanation side reactions when raw gas conditions change. It significantly reduces exhaust emissions and marks a major advancement in the field of synthetic ammonia production using pulverized coal gasification.
The process leverages the low water content of the feed gas from the Shell waste pan process and utilizes the company's independently developed QDB-04 catalyst. By precisely controlling the water/gas ratio during the first reactor shift reaction, the system effectively manages the reaction depth and bed temperature. This innovation allows for the efficient conversion of high CO concentration feed gas under low water/gas ratio conditions without triggering methanation side reactions.
After over a year of industrial application, monitoring data shows that the first-stage water/gas ratio remains below 0.3, and the maximum water/gas ratio in each stage does not exceed 0.5. The hot spot temperature stays under 400°C, ensuring mild operating conditions, smooth operation of the conversion unit, and no occurrence of unwanted side reactions. This leads to substantial reductions in steam consumption and equipment costs, delivering both economic and environmental benefits. The technology is now recognized as among the most advanced globally.
