On May 9, a reporter learned from the State Oceanic Administration that the marine chemical industry is increasingly becoming a key driver of China's marine economy and technological development. According to recent data, the total annual output value of major marine chemical industries in China exceeds 120 billion yuan, marking it as a significant growth engine for the country's marine sector.
According to official statistics, in 2005, the total output value of China's marine chemical industry surpassed 120 billion yuan. The offshore oil and gas sector continued to grow rapidly, with an output value of 73.9 billion yuan—an increase of 46.7 billion yuan, or 17.9% compared to the previous year. Marine crude oil production exceeded 30 million tons, up 11.5% from the prior year, while marine natural gas output reached 627.721 million cubic meters, rising by 2.3%.
With advancements in marine biopharmaceutical technology, the industrialization of marine biomedicine has accelerated. In 2005, the total output value of the marine biomedical industry was 4.8 billion yuan, with an added value of 1.7 billion yuan, showing a 15.6% year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, the soda ash and caustic soda manufacturing sectors have also seen strong growth, driving up demand for salt and boosting sea salt production. China has maintained its position as the world's top producer of sea salt for many years. In 2005, the marine salt industry generated 12.4 billion yuan in output, up 5.2 billion yuan, or 22.7% compared to the previous year. Other marine-related chemical industries contributed an additional 29.3 billion yuan to the total.
Provincial performance in marine chemicals has been particularly notable. Shandong leads in the marine salt industry, accounting for 66.9% of the national output. Guangdong remains at the forefront in offshore oil and gas, contributing 48.7% of the national output. Jiangsu ranks first in the marine biomedical industry, with 37.4% of the national output.
Globally, marine chemistry and technology are gaining increasing attention. While more than 20 marine industries exist in some developed countries, China has 12 key sectors, including marine chemicals covering oil and gas, salt, biopharmaceuticals, and seawater desalination. Additionally, the application of high-tech research into new marine resources such as methane hydrates, deep-sea minerals, and biological genes has become a global focus in marine science and chemical innovation.
