Nestled along the Illinois/Wisconsin border in McHenry County lies the quaint town of Richmond and its dedicated fire protection district. Covering approximately 28 square miles from a single fire station bustling with firefighting equipment, the Richmond Fire Protection District operates within Division 5. What makes this station unique is its architectural design—essentially an 'L-shaped' structure where all the apparatus bays are located at the rear.

The department is led by a full-time chief and supported by 40 part-time firefighters who keep the community safe. Their fleet includes two engines, a ladder truck, a tanker, two ambulances, a brush unit, two all-wheel-drive ATVs, and a versatile pickup truck that serves both as a chase vehicle during medical runs and a personal transport for night-shift commanders. To add a touch of history, the department also maintains two beautifully restored antique fire engines.
One of their standout pieces of equipment is a 1984 E-ONE, 110-foot rear-mount single-axle straight truck purchased from Franklin Park. Originally a custom cab/chassis model with a square cab, Richmond gave it a modern update by refreshing the emergency lighting, repainting the black roof white, and making several other improvements before putting it back into service.

Interestingly, one of Richmond's engines, built in 1999 by US Tank with an enclosed top-mount pump panel, shares a twin in the neighboring Spring Grove. Both vehicles boast the HME 1871 super command cab, offering both functionality and reliability.

This fire protection district plays a crucial role in maintaining safety across its expansive territory, ensuring residents have access to professional and well-equipped emergency services. With its strategic layout and diverse fleet, the Richmond Fire Protection District stands as a testament to community resilience and preparedness.
