Nestled along the border of Illinois and Wisconsin, within McHenry County, lies the charming town of Richmond and its Richmond Fire Protection District. Serving Division 5, this district covers approximately 28 square miles from a single fire station that houses an impressive array of firefighting equipment. One of the most distinctive features of the Richmond fire station is the unique architectural design where all the apparatus bays are located at the rear of the 'L-shaped' building.

The department operates with a full-time chief and relies on 40 part-time firefighters to keep the community safe. Their fleet includes two engines, a ladder truck, a tanker, two ambulances, a brush unit, two all-wheel-drive ATVs, and a versatile pickup truck that serves as both a chase vehicle for medical runs and a personal transport for the night shift commanders. Rounding out their impressive collection are two beautifully restored antique engines.
A few years back, Richmond acquired a 1984 E-ONE 110-foot rear-mount single-axle straight truck from Franklin Park. This early custom cab/chassis model features a square cab. Upon acquisition, the department upgraded the emergency lighting, painted the black roof white, and made several other modifications before putting it into active service.

Interestingly, one of Richmond’s 1999 US Tank engines, equipped with an enclosed top-mount pump panel, shares a twin sister in neighboring Spring Grove. Both vehicles boast the HME 1871 super command cab, showcasing a shared lineage and design philosophy.

Despite its relatively small size, the Richmond Fire Protection District plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and security of its residents. With a focus on modernization and tradition alike, the department continues to evolve while honoring its rich history. Whether responding to emergencies or participating in community events, the dedicated members of the Richmond FPD remain steadfast in their commitment to excellence.
This blend of innovation and heritage makes the Richmond Fire Protection District not just a vital public service entity but also a cornerstone of local pride.
