The Huntley Fire Protection District was called to a second-alarm apartment fire on Sunday that tragically claimed the life of a resident. The incident occurred in a six-unit Woodcreek Apartments building located at 11702 Woodcreek Drive, Huntley. Firefighters responded at 6:12 a.m., and the blaze quickly spread from the first-floor unit where the victim lived, engulfing the upper floors as well.
According to the Daily Herald, Allen "Al" R. Jacobs, a 47-year-old man, had once been involved in a serious car accident as a teenager that left him paralyzed from the waist down. His longtime friend Randy Albrecht, from Lake in the Hills, shared that Jacobs had always feared dying in a situation where he couldn’t escape. Standing outside the burned-out building on Sunday, Albrecht reflected on his friend’s life, which was cut short by the early morning fire.
Fifteen surrounding fire departments joined the Huntley Fire Protection District in battling the flames. One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin for treatment before being released.
The Chicago Tribune reported that McHenry County officials confirmed the identity of the deceased as Allen R. Jacobs, who resided in the Woodcreek Apartments. The fire, which started in one of the units, led to the displacement of 10 residents. Battalion Chief Tim Flannigan of the Huntley Fire Department described the structure as a wood-frame building with six units. He noted that the fire began in the unit where Jacobs was found dead.
