I recently came across some interesting updates about the Skokie Fire Department's history and current operations. First off, I spotted a familiar piece of firefighting history on its way to the scrapyard. It was none other than Skokie’s old 1969 Pirsch Snorkel, which had served as Truck 16 during its time in service. This iconic vehicle, later sold to Wally Mitchell and then Jim Carey, had taken quite the journey since being decommissioned in the mid-1990s. Unfortunately, it didn't have much of its original equipment left—most notably, the basket was missing, along with any other accessories it once carried. The story goes that the current owner managed to drive it just one mile before getting pulled over by a state trooper for having an unsafe load.
Looking at the photos, you can see how stripped down the vehicle has become. One image even shows the rear where the bucket is clearly absent. It’s sad to think that such a historic piece of firefighting machinery could end up like this, but it serves as a reminder of how quickly things change in the world of emergency services.
On a brighter note, there’s some positive news from Skokie regarding their fleet. Tower 16, which underwent refurbishment by Pierce, is now back in the station but still awaiting full operational status. Meanwhile, Engine 17’s Pierce Saber is currently undergoing extensive repairs at RPI in Tipton, Indiana. These updates highlight both the challenges and resilience within the department as they strive to maintain their fleet while preserving pieces of their past.
As someone who appreciates fire service history, these stories resonate deeply with me. Seeing these vehicles transition through different phases—from active duty to retirement and now possibly to preservation—is fascinating. Whether it’s a beloved old Snorkel making its final trip or newer models getting restored to pristine condition, each step tells part of the story of modern firefighting evolution.
