Of interest … Make-A-Wish Foundation and fire department help 7-year-old

Excerpts from whsv.com:

For a 7-year-old boy in Hanover County, Virginia, a long-awaited dream finally came true on Monday. Javi Guzman had been eagerly waiting for his Make-A-Wish day for months, especially after the pandemic delayed many of his hopes and plans. Now, he’s officially become the youngest member of the Hanover County firehouse.

"He's been counting down the days for this moment," said his mother, Amy Guzman. "Every time a fire truck passes by our house, he rushes outside to watch." His father, Martin Guzman, added, "When he was little, he always said, 'I want to be a firefighter one day.' I told him, 'You have to work hard, but one day it could happen.'"

Javi’s wish was made real through a special ceremony organized by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, filled with excitement, adventure, and unforgettable memories.

"It was an easy decision for us," said Hanover Fire Chief Jethro Piland. "Javi is truly inspiring. His courage and strength are incredible."

Javi has shown remarkable bravery throughout his life. He has been battling a type of blood cancer since early childhood and is now in remission. But his journey hasn’t just been about fighting illness — it’s also about the people who stood by him.

Months ago, the Guzman family faced a devastating home fire. But instead of being discouraged, Javi was inspired by the firefighters who rushed to their aid. "These are the firefighters who responded to his home when the fire happened," Chief Piland explained.

Now, he’s part of that same brotherhood. In a heartfelt ceremony, Javi was officially sworn in as a firefighter. He got to ride in a fire truck, tour the firehouse, tackle an obstacle course, use a fire hose, and climb high up a ladder — all while surrounded by his classmates and friends.

His biggest wish was to take a ride in a helicopter, and Make-A-Wish made it happen. For Javi, this day was more than just a celebration — it was a symbol of hope, strength, and support.

"When you have people who stand by you, you feel like you can overcome anything," Amy Guzman said, fighting back tears. "This is something he’ll never forget."

The Make-A-Wish Foundation continues to rely on volunteers to help make dreams come true for children like Javi. If you're interested in supporting kids in need, visit their website to learn more and get involved.
