Of interest … Make-A-Wish Foundation and fire department help 7-year-old

Excerpts from whsv.com:

For a 7-year-old boy in Hanover County, Virginia, a dream that had been delayed by the pandemic finally came true on Monday. Javi Guzman, full of excitement and anticipation, waited for months to experience his Make-A-Wish day. And now, he's officially part of the Hanover County fire department as its youngest-ever member.

"He’s been waiting for this moment for so long," said Amy Guzman, Javi’s mother. "Every time a siren goes by our house, he rushes outside to see what’s happening." Her husband, Martin Guzman, added, "When he was little, he used to say, 'I want to be a firefighter one day.' I told him, 'You have to work hard, but one day, you will.'

Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Javi’s wish was made real through a special ceremony and an unforgettable day filled with adventure and excitement.

"It was an easy decision—no hesitation at all," said Hanover Fire Chief Jethro Piland. "Javi is truly an inspiration to us all with his courage and determination."

Javi has faced challenges most firefighters never encounter. He has been battling a form of blood cancer since childhood and is now in remission. But there's more to his admiration for firefighters than just their bravery.

Months ago, the Guzman family went through a heartbreaking experience when their home caught fire. However, it was the brave firefighters who responded that left a lasting impression on Javi.

"These are the firefighters who came to help when Javi’s house caught fire," Chief Piland explained.

Now, he's not just a fan—he's a part of the brotherhood. Javi was officially sworn in during a heartfelt ceremony. As part of the day, he rode in a firetruck, toured the firehouse, faced an obstacle course, used a fire hose, and climbed high up a ladder.

Even his classmates joined in the celebration, making the day even more special for Javi.

His mother says Javi’s bravery is truly limitless. His biggest wish was to take a ride in a helicopter, and Make-A-Wish made it happen.

This will be a memory Javi will carry with him for a lifetime, surrounded by people who support and believe in him every step of the way.

"When you have that kind of support, you feel like you can overcome anything," Amy Guzman said, fighting back tears.

Make-A-Wish is always looking for volunteers. If you're inspired by stories like Javi's and want to make a difference in a child's life, visit their website to learn more.
