This report comes from Eric Haak: At 1624 hours on Friday, December 7th, a fire broke out in an abandoned two-story building located at the corner of Drake and 16th Street in Chicago. The structure was 50 by 125 feet and had a residential unit above commercial space. Upon arrival, Engine 38 and Engine 109, along with Ladder 48 and Ladder 32, were among the first units on scene. The 14th Battalion was also dispatched. Truck 26 served as RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) under the 13th Battalion. Just six minutes after the first units arrived, the incident turned defensive when Ladder 48 reported a compromised roof. By 1635 hours, the 14th Battalion called for a "still and box" operation, and nine minutes later, a 2-11 alarm was issued, followed by a 2-2-1 alarm shortly after. Squad 1 used its snorkel from a vacant lot to the southeast of the fire building, while Tower Ladder 54 set up operations in Sector 1 on 16th Street. Tower Ladder 5 was positioned on Drake Street, directly west of the fire building.
