The Benefit for Elgin Firefighter's Family is Happening Today

From ChicagoTribune.com:

Tim Hinds returned from his mother’s funeral in February only to face another heartbreaking moment. He had been in touch with his wife, Joyce, several times during the days he was away. When she didn’t answer the phone on the day he was heading back to their home in the Rockford area, he wasn’t too concerned. But when he pulled into the garage and saw her sitting on the stoop inside, he realized something was wrong. She wasn’t responding.

Joyce, who had been married to Tim for 31 years and was just 55, had suffered a massive stroke. Since the incident on February 23rd, she has been hospitalized, and the stroke affected her ability to swallow, speak, and walk. Although doctors have helped her regain some of her eating abilities, and she recently took a few steps using a cane, she still hasn't regained her ability to speak clearly.

There have been more challenges along the way. Nerve pain from the stroke made physical therapy difficult, but once the pain was managed, Joyce caught pneumonia — which she has since recovered from. Tim is hopeful that she will be able to come home soon, and the Elgin Fire Department has been a big support in making that happen.

Tim works as an engine driver with the Elgin Fire Department. Members of the Elgin Association of Firefighters Local 439 have already helped install a ramp and other accessibility features at the Hinds’ home to make it easier for Joyce to return. The firefighters' union is continuing its support by hosting a benefit event for the family this Saturday.

The fundraiser will take place at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Danny’s on Douglas, located at 231 Douglas Ave. in Elgin. Admission is $20, which includes pizza, soda, and one raffle ticket for a basket. Additional raffle tickets are available for $5 each, and there's also a cash raffle where you can get three tickets for $50, with prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250.

Although insurance has covered some of Joyce’s medical costs, there are still gaps. After her recent bout with pneumonia, which delayed her recovery, the insurance company wanted to discharge her until she could begin therapy again. To avoid unnecessary moves, the Hinds are paying out-of-pocket for her stay at a rehab center in Niles.

Doctors remain optimistic about Joyce’s recovery, citing her youth and good health as positive factors. Tim expressed deep gratitude to the Elgin firefighters, calling them his “band of brothers” for their unwavering support during this tough time.

When Joyce was at the University of Wisconsin hospital, Tim told the staff that while there weren’t many family members visiting, she would likely have “a whole bunch of brothers called firefighters,” and they’ve been there for him. “I can’t thank them enough,” he said.

Thanks Dan
