One year ago, Flyability introduced its groundbreaking drone, the Elios 2. Since then, we've been eager to understand how users have responded and what impact this innovation has had in the field. In this article, we take a closer look at the progress made in industrial drone applications throughout 2019 and share initial feedback from industries, users, and pilots who have been using the Elios 2 for several months now.

2019 – A Turning Point for Robotics in Industrial Inspections

Looking back, 2019 marked a major turning point for robotics in inspections. More and more large industrial companies are integrating drones into their operations. As reported by Bloomberg in an article titled "Drones Do Deadly Work So You Don’t Have To," companies like Dow, AT&T, BASF, and Shell are using drones to keep workers safe while cutting down on inspection costs significantly. Among these advancements, we're especially proud of the role drones are playing in confined space inspections. In 2019, Dow announced that they eliminated 1,000 confined space entries thanks to robotic solutions, and construction giant LafargeHolcim included drones as a key part of its “Plants of Tomorrow” initiative. For Flyability, 2019 was all about the launch of the Elios 2—a drone designed for a wide range of indoor tasks, making even new users feel like experienced pilots. The Elios 2 represents a major leap forward in indoor inspection robotics, with features like oblique lighting, distance lock, and intuitive controls developed based on direct feedback from professionals in various industries.

2020 and Beyond – How Drones Are Supporting Inspections Today

Over the past year, many of our customers have shared inspiring success stories and real-world results. Here are some highlights:

Oil & Gas / Maritime

Bureau Veritas France used the Elios 2 for a ballast tank inspection for Total. The outcome was a safer and faster process, with high-quality HD images available after the mission.

They also used the Elios 2 at a coal power plant to inspect the filtration system during downtime. The drone completed the task in 8 hours, compared to 120 hours with traditional methods. Read more here.

Maritime

Our U.S. partner MFE Rentals conducted a ballast tank inspection with the Elios 2. One pilot completed the task in three ten-minute flights. Traditionally, this would require three to four inspectors using ropes, oxygen monitors, and extensive safety gear. The drone’s collision resistance and built-in lighting made the process much safer and more efficient.

Indoor Photogrammetry – Mining & Beyond

UAS Inc., a mining inspection company, used the Elios 2 for underground photogrammetry. Many users praise the drone for its ability to perform detailed scans in dark and GPS-denied environments.

Drone Usage and Development

Asset owners are seeing a strong return on investment even with just a few missions per month. In a survey of 250 Elios 1 and 2 users, 45% performed 2–5 missions monthly, while 41% did less than two.

According to the same study, 85% of respondents plan to increase indoor drone inspections over the next five years, and 73% expect to expand their drone fleets. It's clear that the future of industrial inspection is flying high—and it's powered by drones like the Elios 2.

Phenoxyethanol

Phenoxyethanol is a germicidal and germistatic glycol ether, phenol ether, and aromatic alcohol often used together with quaternary ammonium compounds. Phenoxyethanol is used as a perfume fixative; an insect repellent; an antiseptic; a solvent for cellulose acetate, dyes, inks, and resins; a preservative for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and lubricants; an anesthetic in fish aquaculture; and in organic synthesis.
