SAN FRANCISCO, July 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — As part of its ongoing commitment to providing customers with advanced digital tools to stay competitive, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) today announced the next phase of its initiative to enhance the skills of current construction workers and inspire the next generation to explore careers in the industry. The company’s latest offerings, Construction Master Class and the Autodesk Construction Cloud Learning Center, aim to equip construction professionals with the skills they need to advance their careers and adapt to the evolving demands of the industry.

New initiatives aim to develop tech skills in the current workforce and encourage a new and diverse generation to consider construction as a career

Construction is facing a global challenge with both a labor shortage and a digital skills gap. According to the latest annual survey by Associated General Contractors of America and Autodesk, 89% of American construction firms are struggling to fill hourly craft positions, while 86% are having difficulty with salaried positions. Sixty-one percent of firms reported project delays due to workforce shortages. Similarly, a recent Core Research survey commissioned by Autodesk found that Irish construction professionals largely attribute their recruitment difficulties to a lack of skilled labor (59%), with 43% believing that while labor is available, companies are failing to attract the right candidates. To address these challenges, Autodesk has introduced two new programs: Construction Master Class and the Autodesk Construction Cloud Learning Center. Construction Master Class provides free online tutorials from industry leaders. These videos, hosted by top construction experts, offer practical insights and best practices for improving workflows and career advancement. Participants can gain valuable knowledge directly from industry leaders and Autodesk experts on achieving critical project outcomes like better cost control, improved quality management, and standardized field collaboration workflows, all through a blend of personal stories, use cases, and lessons learned. The Autodesk Construction Cloud Learning Center houses user-friendly courses available in five languages, teaching users how to leverage Autodesk Construction Cloud products like Autodesk Build, Autodesk Takeoff, and Autodesk Docs. These learning paths include videos offering step-by-step instructions on mastering digital construction skills such as setting up project templates, tracking issues, managing RFIs and submittals, and fostering team collaboration. Since launching in the spring of 2021, the Learning Center has seen over 42,000 course enrollments from 134 countries. In addition to these initiatives, Autodesk has also launched several programs aimed at boosting tech proficiency among current workers and attracting a more diverse pool of newcomers to the field. These include: - The Autodesk Membership Training Provider Program: Over 215 trade unions and industry associations are now part of this program, designed to enhance the digital skills of members. Training centers receive Autodesk software products, such as Autodesk Construction Cloud and Revit, for an annual subscription fee. This program strengthens BIM and CAD training efforts at existing sites and enables new locations to offer advanced training opportunities. - Autodesk’s Make It Real program: A community education initiative that encourages young people to apply design thinking to real-world construction and infrastructure challenges. The program offers inspiration, learning opportunities, and funding support, including this year’s $50,000 in microgrants distributed through the Building Changemakers Giveaway. Recipients can allocate the funds as needed, covering costs like tuition, certification fees, safety equipment, and childcare. “With the ongoing labor shortage, especially as current workers retire, the demand for skilled professionals with digital expertise is skyrocketing,” said Ronald McGuire, program administrator at the International Training Institute. “We urgently need workers proficient in technology, whether on-site, in trailers, or in offices. Autodesk’s learning resources will empower our members to quickly acquire the necessary skills.” “Allison Scott, director of customer experience and industry advocacy at Autodesk, added, “By 2031, approximately 41% of U.S. construction professionals are expected to retire, according to McKinsey. While new projects and roles are emerging, the industry struggles to bring in enough people with the right skills. Our learning initiatives are designed to help companies adapt swiftly and stay competitive during the digital transformation.”
