Yesterday's large brush fire in Buffalo Grove made headlines as it quickly spread across dry vegetation, endangering several homes and leaving hundreds of residents without power. The fire, which reached heights of over 30 feet, was fueled by dry conditions and affected approximately 30 acres of land. It also damaged numerous utility poles and power lines, causing around 2,400 ComEd customers to experience a loss of electricity.
According to The Daily Herald, the fire was accidentally started by a 20-year-old male who was allegedly setting off illegal fireworks. An off-duty police officer noticed four individuals fleeing the scene and managed to detain them until Buffalo Grove police arrived. It was later determined that these individuals were responsible for igniting the blaze.
Gabriel R. Horwich, the 20-year-old involved, has been arrested and charged with criminal damage to property by reckless means of fire, a felony that could result in up to three years in prison. Authorities expressed relief that no one was injured and no homes were destroyed, crediting the swift response of firefighters from over 20 departments for containing the situation effectively.
By Sunday evening, ComEd had managed to restore power to almost all affected homes, though the fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damages to the electrical infrastructure. As of Sunday night, three other individuals associated with Horwich had not yet been charged, although investigations remained ongoing. Horwich is scheduled to appear in bond court on Monday morning.
Photos capturing the intensity of the fire show towering flames and thick smoke engulfing the area near power lines. Firefighting efforts involved deploying water streams from various locations to control the spread of the blaze. Emergency command posts were set up nearby, and communication support was provided to ensure smooth coordination among responders.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by illegal fireworks, especially during periods of drought when wildfires can escalate rapidly. Residents are encouraged to report any unauthorized use of fireworks to local authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
