Tucson's HJ3 and Grannus named national finalists in 2013 Cleantech Open
Tucson, Arizona, made headlines this year as two local startups, HJ3 Composite Technologies and Grannus, were selected as national finalists in the 2013 Cleantech Open. The recognition came during the annual IdeaFunding event, hosted by Tech Launch Arizona, which gives entrepreneurs a chance to present their innovative ideas to experienced investors and gain critical feedback to boost their chances of success.
The event kicked off with a speech from Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, who emphasized the city’s growing role as a hub for tech innovation. He highlighted the importance of programs like Tech Launch Arizona, which supports university-based startups and helps turn research into real-world solutions. This kind of support is helping Tucson build a stronger entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Arizona, and particularly Tucson, has long been known as a hotbed for innovation. The state ranks among the top five cities for entrepreneurs, according to Entrepreneur Magazine. With nine incubators and numerous resources available, local startups have a strong foundation to grow and thrive.
HJ3 and Grannus are prime examples of how the local community can fuel success. HJ3, a technology transfer from the University of Arizona, has already won the Arizona Innovation Challenge twice and now stands as a national finalist in the Cleantech Open Accelerator. Both companies received $20,000 in funding and in-kind services, and will compete against 22 other winners at the National Global Forum in San Jose on November 20th and 21st, with prizes totaling up to $200,000.
