Tucson, Arizona, made headlines this year as two local companies, HJ3 Composite Technologies and Grannus, were named national finalists in the 2013 Cleantech Open. The recognition came during the annual IdeaFunding event, hosted by Tech Launch Arizona, where startups had the opportunity to present their innovative ideas to experienced investors and gain critical feedback for growth.
The event was officially opened by Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, who emphasized the city's growing role as a hub for tech innovation and entrepreneurship. He praised the efforts of organizations like Tech Launch Arizona, which support university-based startups and help turn academic research into real-world solutions. His speech highlighted the city’s commitment to building a thriving ecosystem for entrepreneurs and technology-driven businesses.
Arizona continues to be a top destination for startups, with Tucson standing out for its strong network of incubators and support systems. With nine active incubators, the city offers entrepreneurs not just workspace, but also mentorship, funding opportunities, and collaboration platforms essential for business success.
HJ3, a startup that originated from the University of Arizona, has been making waves in the clean technology space. It recently won the Arizona Innovation Challenge for two years in a row and is now competing on a national stage. Alongside Grannus, HJ3 received $20,000 in cash and in-kind support, positioning them among 24 other finalists from over 300 teams nationwide. They will compete at the Cleantech Open National Global Forum in San Jose, California, on November 20th and 21st, with prizes totaling up to $200,000.
HJ3 Composite Technologies focuses on sustainable infrastructure solutions, offering advanced composite systems that reinforce aging structures globally. With more than 10,000 successful installations worldwide, the company is helping cities and industries reduce costs and environmental impact while extending the life of critical infrastructure. Their work reflects a growing trend toward eco-friendly, long-term solutions in construction and engineering.
