Mothers of babies who smoke during pregnancy may find it difficult to cope with the stress of everyday life due to alterations in the DNA that regulates the stress hormone channel and DNA transmitted from the mother to the fetus, a study said. In this way, mothers' newborns show lower levels of stress hormones and reduce stress responses, the survey results show. "Our findings indicate that these newborns may not be able to install enough hormonal reactions to daily stress," said Laura Stroud, chief researcher at Miriam's hospital in Rhode Island. "Their stress system is not yet ready for stress," Stroud added. The study included 100 pairs of newborns. The results showed that infants exposed to smoking exhibited reduced levels of stress hormone cortisol at baseline and responded to neurobehavioral tests.
