From IllinoisFireSafetyAlliance.com: Between June 19 and 25, 2016, around 70 children who have suffered burn injuries will gather for the 26th annual Camp “I Am Me†in Ingleside, Illinois. Hosted by YMCA Camp Duncan and organized by the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA), this special camp offers kids aged 8 to 16 a unique opportunity to experience typical summer camp activities alongside tailored programs designed specifically for burn survivors. Despite the cost of $2,400 per child, the camp is completely free, made possible through generous donations from individuals and organizations. "These children were burned under various circumstances—whether from scalding water, chemicals, fire, or electrical accidents," said a spokesperson. "While they represent only a small fraction of the hundreds of Illinois children injured by burns each year, we work closely with hospital burn units to raise awareness and reach more kids. Our mission is to ensure every burn-injured child in the state has access to this life-changing experience." Beyond traditional camp fun, the program includes character-building exercises, journaling, and therapeutic sessions. These activities are conducted in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where children can learn from one another, build confidence, and discover new ways to heal. Many of these resources aren't available in their own communities, making the camp even more valuable. "Many kids feel isolated during their recovery, especially if they face teasing or bullying because of their scars—both visible and emotional," explained Zaleski. "But at camp, they realize they're not alone. They learn to embrace who they are, and that has a lasting, positive impact on their lives." Interestingly, over one-third of the volunteers each year are former campers themselves, showing the long-term impact of the program. In addition, firefighters, medical professionals, teachers, and business leaders also contribute their time, ensuring there's nearly one volunteer for every camper. On Wednesday, June 22, the public is invited to attend Appreciation Day, starting at 11:00 a.m. with a fire apparatus parade featuring sirens and emergency vehicles from across the state. Following the parade, guests can enjoy lunch at noon and a special ceremony at 1:00 p.m., where donors, supporters, and volunteers are recognized. Later in the day, campers will take part in a Fun Fair filled with games, face painting, dunk tanks, bounce houses, and prizes for all.
