On May 15, the new emergency rapid response vehicle made its debut and reached Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington in just 90 seconds to assist a patient. This is a significant improvement compared to the previous response time of about five minutes, according to Fire Battalion Chief Scott Motisi from the Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District.
Before this specialized unit was deployed, a fire engine would have had to come from the Barrington Hills station, which is farther away. The re-equipped 2004 Ford Excursion now carries medical equipment typically found on an ambulance, along with hydraulic tools and a four-gas monitor. "It can handle most emergencies in the first five minutes," Motisi explained.
The district covers a large area, serving around 20,000 residents across parts of Barrington Hills, South Barrington, Lake Barrington, Inverness, and Fox River Grove, as well as portions of Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties—spanning 46 square miles. Notably, 80% of the area doesn't have fire hydrants. Instead, firefighters rely on nearby retention ponds and water tenders for firefighting operations.
"Residents chose this rural setup with larger lots over having fire hydrants," said Roman, a local official. Tom Long, the board president of the fire district, emphasized the importance of quick access to both fire and medical services in such a vast area. "We’re always looking for cost-effective ways to reduce response times," he said.
The new vehicle operates from the South Barrington Police Department between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., Monday through Friday—when most calls are received. "It’s data-driven," Long added. The unit handles eight to 10 calls per week, helping the district meet the American Heart Association’s six-minute response goal for cardiac emergencies.
Fire Chief Jeffrey Swanson mentioned that the district is planning to open a third fire station. "This vehicle will help us prepare for that," he said. While no location has been finalized yet, the current Ford Excursion, valued at $47,500, has already proven its value. A new, fully equipped model would cost $113,000, according to Swanson.
