Arlington Heights Fire Department units responded to a reported basement fire on Monday evening at 106 S. Walnut Avenue. Tower 1 was the first to arrive and observed smoke coming from the basement. They deployed a hose line through the rear entrance while another line was prepared at the front door. Firefighters discovered that the smoke was caused by pyrotechnics being used by the homeowner, resulting in significant smoke but very little actual fire. Two photographs captured the scene: one showing Tower 1 with two lines in place, and another depicting firefighters entering the rear of the house. Additional units from Arlington Heights arrived on the scene, along with a mutual aid engine from Rolling Meadows. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived after the smoke had cleared and captured images of the incident. Among the photos was Engine 3, the newest addition to the department’s fleet, which had just been put into service. The new engine features some design improvements compared to previous models, as seen in the photos. Another image showed Engine 2, the first unit on the scene, and a shot of Tower 1 positioned in front of the residence. The event highlighted both the quick response of the firefighters and the modernization of their equipment.
