Excerpts from CBSnews.com:

A fire broke out on Wednesday at Pier 11 Marina on the city’s Far South Side, causing significant damage to at least four boats. Officials estimate that the total damages could exceed $1.1 million.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m., when crews from both the Chicago Fire Department and the Dolton Fire Department responded to the marina located at 826 E. 138th St., along the Little Calumet River near the southern edge of the city. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered three boats already engulfed in flames.

As emergency personnel worked to contain the fire, it spread to a fourth vessel. According to reports, the blaze was sparked when a recreational boat owner attempted to winterize his boat—a process that involves covering the vessel with a plastic tarp and sealing it with heat. The owner was using a propane tank during this procedure when the fire suddenly ignited.

Among the affected vessels was a historic ship used for tours along the Chicago River. The boat was owned and operated by Chicago First Lady Cruises and its sister company, Mercury Cruises. The loss of this vessel is expected to have a lasting impact on local tourism.

From ChicagoFDMedia on Twitter:

Marina fire at 824 East 138. Two boats involved. Fire companies have been working for hours. Dolton FD arrived first, realized it was in Chicago, called CFD but stayed on scene with an aerial unit to help douse the flames. Fire may have started from a winterizing mishap.
