A fire broke out this morning at 9401 S. Muskegan on Chicago’s South Side, starting in the basement and quickly spreading upward through two floors. The blaze eventually caused a stairway on the upper level to collapse, injuring four Chicago firefighters who were inside the building at the time.
The incident occurred around 8:43 a.m., and emergency crews responded swiftly. According to Deputy District Chief Lynda Turner of the Chicago Fire Department, about 200 firefighters were deployed to the scene. The injured personnel were working on a stairwell connecting the second and third floors when the structure gave way.
Fire Department Commander Sean Flynn confirmed that none of the firefighters suffered broken bones. Two of them experienced minor smoke inhalation, while the others sustained less severe injuries. All four were transported to Trinity Hospital for evaluation and are reported to be in stable condition.
The "Mayday" alarm was activated around 9 a.m., signaling the urgent need for assistance. The fire started in a ground-floor unit and spread rapidly, prompting officials to issue an emergency response. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Photos from the scene show the extent of the damage and the location where the stairway collapsed. Local media, including Tim Olk and CFD Media, captured the aftermath, highlighting the dangerous conditions faced by first responders.
This event serves as a reminder of the risks firefighters face daily as they work to protect lives and property. The community has expressed support for the injured crew, and officials have praised the quick response of the emergency teams involved.
