Weaver Group Cuts Irish Business

On March 14th, the Wavin Group, the leading manufacturer of European plastic pipe, announced that it will reduce its business in Ireland.
According to the group, this adjustment will include reducing production capacity at its Balbriggan production plant in Dublin, north of Dublin, reducing the region’s management capabilities and enhancing logistics distribution. The group did not disclose how much production capacity would be reduced in the end, nor did it disclose which products were specifically involved. It was announced that of the existing 198 employees of the plant, 50 were expected to be laid off. The adjustment is expected to end in September this year.
The group stated that although net profit increased by 26.7% in 2007, they are not optimistic about the plastic pipe market in the UK and Ireland. The decision was made because of the shrinking construction market in Ireland. The company said that business adjustment will not affect its dominant position in the field of plastic pipe in Ireland.
The Wavin Group is Europe's leading manufacturer of plastic pipe systems and can provide complete solutions for water treatment, sewage treatment, drainage, infiltration equipment, cooling and heating equipment, and waste water treatment. The group is headquartered in Zwolle, the Netherlands, and has revenue of 1.6 billion euros in 2007. At present, the group has branches in 28 countries in Europe and has production plants in 17 of them.
The Weaver Group has been actively expanding through the acquisition, establishment of factories and new sales outlets. The most recent acquisition was the purchase of Turkish Pilsa Plastics in January this year.
